Mexico records 48% decline in homicides under Sheinbaum's security strategy

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that homicide rates in Mexico fell 48 percent between September 2024 and June 2026, dropping the daily average from 86.9 to 45.4 cases – the lowest level since 2015. The reduction was highlighted as a result of the four‑pillar National Security Strategy (addressing causes, strengthening the National Guard, intelligence and coordination). State‑level data show similar trends: Quintana Roo registered a 60.1 % cut, Morelos lowered its daily average from 3.7 to 1.9 cases, the State of Mexico saw a 38 % decline, San Luis Potosí achieved an 81.7 % drop, and other entities such as Zacatecas and Baja California recorded declines of 61.8 % and 20.9 % respectively. Across the country, security operations resulted in more than 59,500 arrests for high‑impact crimes, the seizure of about 31,000 firearms, nearly 500 tons of illegal drugs and the dismantling of roughly 2,600 clandestine laboratories. The reports also note successes in combating extortion and other serious offenses, underscoring the broader impact of the coordinated federal‑state security effort.
