Mexico questions US FBI role in capture of drug lord ‘El Mayo’ Zambada

Mexico’s government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, has demanded clarification from the United States about the possible involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the July 2024 operation that detained Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. Sheinbaum queried former U.S. ambassador Ken Salazar’s earlier statements that no U.S. agencies participated, after a report revealed the aircraft used to transport Zambada is displayed in an FBI exhibition. Mexico’s interior secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez warned that undisclosed U.S. participation would violate the UN Charter, the OAS Charter, the Mexican Constitution and the National Security Law, and she asked the Attorney General’s Office to formally request information from the FBI. The United States maintains that its agencies were not involved, while the FBI’s display of the plane has fueled the dispute. Zambada has simultaneously accepted a life‑sentence in a U.S. federal court, seeking placement in a medical‑capacity prison due to his age and health issues.
