Mexico-US Zambada dispute continues

Overview

President‑elect Claudia Sheinbaum and Mexico’s Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) have kept pressure on the United States for a full accounting of the July 2024 operation that captured Sinaloa cartel co‑founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. The FGR has opened thirty‑two investigative files, interviewed 153 witnesses and filed over a thousand reports, alleging violations of Mexican constitutional and international law, a secret U.S.–Mexico pact and false statements by former U.S. ambassador Ken Salazar. Thirteen diplomatic requests have been sent to the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI, with only partial replies received.

On 12 July 2026 U.S. prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York filed a motion seeking a mandatory life sentence and a $15 billion forfeiture based on Zambada’s August 2025 guilty plea. The sentencing hearing is set for 20 July 2026, and a Chicago judge has postponed the sentencing of Ovidio Guzmán López until after Zambada’s verdict.

In June 2026 the FGR announced forensic analysis that identified Mauro Alberto Núñez Ojeda, alias “El Jando”, as the pilot who flew Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López to an airfield in New Mexico on 25 July 2024. Voice‑recording and fingerprint matches linked him to the flight; he had been detained in February 2025 after an assault on army and National Guard personnel and extradited to the United States in August 2025 with 25 other high‑risk inmates. Critics argue Mexican authorities knew his role earlier than publicly disclosed.

The U.S. trial continues to raise warnings that testimony could expose links between the cartel and Mexican political figures, including former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Sinaloa governor Rubén Rocha Moya, though evidence remains unconfirmed. The dispute over the FBI’s role and its diplomatic fallout remains the central issue in Mexico‑U.S. relations.
