Mexico presses for a 16‑year extension of the USMCA trade pact

Mexico has announced its intention to seek a 16‑year extension of the United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement (USMCA, known as T‑MEC). Economist Luis Martínez says the United States is the only partner showing hesitation, while Canada and Mexico are keen to preserve the deal.

The proposal, supported by the business group CONCAEM, argues that a longer term would provide legal certainty for investments worth billions, especially in sectors such as automotive, metal‑mechanical, and pharmaceuticals. Martínez estimates the pact adds about $170 billion to Mexico’s GDP each year, with roughly 84 % of Mexican exports destined for the United States. Negotiations on the treaty’s revision have already begun among the three countries, with the current agreement set to run until 2036.
