Mexico President Sheinbaum proposes AI and social media regulation

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has proposed a national debate regarding the regulation of artificial intelligence and social media, specifically focusing on their impact during electoral processes. Sheinbaum highlighted the risks posed by disinformation, the use of automated bots, and manipulated content designed to influence public opinion and political trends.

The President emphasized that any potential regulation must be carefully designed to avoid becoming a mechanism for censorship. She noted that the rapid evolution of digital tools, including personalized algorithms and paid political campaigns, has significantly changed how citizens consume information compared to traditional media.

Because the electoral period has already commenced, Sheinbaum indicated she would consult with Legal Counsel Luisa María Alcalde to determine if the Congress of the Union can legally address these legislative changes at this time. The administration aims to study various international experiences to establish rules that address digital manipulation without restricting freedom of expression.
