Mexico prosecutes murder of Spanish student Claudia Tacoronte as feminicide

The murder of Spanish student Claudia Tacoronte in Mexico is being prosecuted as a feminicide. A suspect, identified by the nickname ‘El Trompas’, was detained following a federal operation and linked to the process for feminicide.

This case has highlighted systemic failures in addressing violence against women in the region. In the months surrounding Tacoronte’s death, three other students from the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM) were also found dead after being reported missing. While some cases have resulted in arrests, local activist groups, such as ‘Heroicas e Históricas’, argue that authorities often fail to react with the same urgency when victims are local women, suggesting that international scrutiny played a role in the swift progress of the Tacoronte investigation.
