Mexico pushes for lower US tariffs in USMCA revision

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the week is crucial for advancing the review of the United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement (USMCA). Mexico is seeking to cut U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles, and Sheinbaum indicated she would speak with President Donald Trump if necessary.

A Mexican delegation, including Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, is in Washington for talks with U.S. officials such as trade representative Jamieson Greer. Negotiations also involve Canada and cover broader issues like agriculture, labor, the environment and rules of origin. The United States has imposed high tariffs on the targeted sectors, and the parties aim to reduce them to keep the trade pact viable.

The talks mark the second round of discussions after a May meeting in Mexico City, with a third round scheduled for July in Mexico. Mexico’s automotive industry, a major beneficiary of the agreement, is closely watching the outcome.
