Mexico pushes monthly agrofair while grappling with rising maize imports

State officials in Morelos announced plans to turn the inaugural Cuautla Agroindustrial Fair into a monthly event. The fair aims to give farmers, artisans and young entrepreneurs a regular venue to sell directly to consumers, cut intermediaries and stimulate the regional economy in eastern Morelos.

At the same time, Mexico’s agriculture ministry is confronting a growing reliance on U.S. corn. Imports of both white and yellow maize have surged, driven by trade liberalisation, reduced domestic support programmes and drought‑affected harvests. Officials have issued conflicting statements on domestic production versus consumption, highlighting concerns that the country now depends on roughly 26 million tonnes of imported corn each year, primarily from the United States.
