Mexico nearshoring investment drive

Overview

By late May 2026 Mexico recorded a record $23.6 billion in FDI, largely from the United States and Spain, and positioned the USMCA‑driven nearshoring boom as a confidence boost. The surge was accompanied by warnings of a talent shortage for advanced manufacturing and digital services. Health‑tech venture funding hit a record $21 million in early June, while the startup ecosystem slipped in global rankings because of regulatory hurdles. State competition for projects intensified across Nuevo León, Coahuila, Chihuahua and Yucatán, and Mexico City promoted a high‑skill “mentefactura” agenda to create well‑paid, women‑friendly jobs.

Simultaneously, the country’s reliance on imported corn rose sharply, reaching roughly 26 million tonnes a year from the United States, prompting food‑security concerns. In early July, Morelos announced that the inaugural Cuautla Agroindustrial Fair would become a monthly market to give farmers and entrepreneurs direct sales channels and to counter the growing maize‑import dependence. A week later, the State of Mexico prepared to host the 5th International Agroindustrial Forum in August, drawing 3,000‑5,000 visitors, over 100 exhibitors and delegations from Russia, Spain, Ukraine, Brazil, Vietnam and Ivory Coast. The forum will showcase modern irrigation, climate‑adaptation practices and digital agro‑food solutions, aiming to attract investment, boost domestic production and diversify the economy beyond nearshoring‑focused manufacturing.
