Mexico pushes tighter Airbnb regulation and data sharing

Mexico City legislators are set to strengthen oversight of short‑term rental platforms, including Airbnb, through a proposed Fair Rent Law and a mandatory platform registry. Officials note that only a few hundred of the more than 13,000 local hosts are currently registered, prompting calls for broader compliance.

In the state of Aguascalientes, the tourism secretary Mauricio González urged the state congress to grant authorities access to Airbnb data. He argued that such information is essential for accurately measuring visitor numbers, evaluating sector performance, and shaping effective tourism policies, as current official statistics capture only traditional hotel occupancy.
