Mexico data regulation and platform oversight

In early August 2026, Mexican legislators began expanding oversight of short‑term rental platforms. The Mexico City legislature proposed a Fair Rent Law that would require platforms such as Airbnb to register and share data with authorities, addressing the fact that only a few hundred of more than 13,000 local hosts were currently listed. At the same time, the tourism secretary of Aguascalientes urged the state congress to grant officials access to Airbnb data to improve visitor statistics and tourism policy.

Two days later, the Mexican state Congress approved broader transparency and personal data measures. The proposals would replace the existing Commission for Access to Public Information (CEGAIP) with a new Instituto Potosino de Apertura Gubernamental (IPAG) and introduce a state law on transparency and personal data protection, dividing CEGAIP’s duties between the new institute and other governmental control bodies. Parallel legislation in Argentina sought to create a comprehensive personal data protection regime, indicating a regional trend toward stricter data governance.
