Mexico pushes toward near‑universal electricity and $5 bn wind power expansion

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) said it completed 2,939 electrification projects in 2026, investing more than 1.167 trillion pesos and bringing electricity to over 63,000 people across the country. The works are part of the 2025‑2028 Priority Works Programme, which plans 42,221 projects costing a total of 18.916 trillion pesos to reach 99.99% national electricity coverage by the end of 2028, focusing on rural, indigenous and marginalized urban communities. CFE also expects to carry out an additional 8,225 projects in 2026, with an investment of 2.726 trillion pesos that will benefit roughly 84,400 residents.

At the same time, Mexico’s wind‑energy sector is forecasting investments of US$4‑5 billion to add about 2,159 MW of new capacity. The planned capacity will raise the country’s installed wind power from 8,131 MW to over 10,000 MW. Major projects include a 705 MW hybrid park with 950 MWh storage, the 252 MW Panama park in Yucatán with 102 MW of batteries, and the 208 MW Vientos del Caribe project in Quintana Roo, among others in Yucatán and Tamaulipas. The sector is following a strict permitting timetable set by the National Energy Commission and the National Center for Energy Control.
