Mexico Repatriates Three Pre‑Hispanic Artifacts from New York Museum

The Mexican government announced the return of three pre‑hispanic objects that had been held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The items—a 91‑centimetre ceramic warrior figure from the Ixtlán del Río style, a stone box from the Guerrero region, and an obsidian prism blade—were handed over to the Consulate General of Mexico in New York on 15 July 2026. Their recovery resulted from a criminal investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office into illegal antiquities trafficking, which also led to the seizure of related pieces in 2025.

The artifacts will travel to Mexico City under diplomatic protection, where they will be placed in the custody of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) for registration, conservation and study. The repatriation follows Mexico’s broader cultural‑heritage policy under President Claudia Sheinbaum, aiming to restore objects of national significance and combat illicit trade. The Metropolitan Museum cooperated with authorities, acknowledging the ethical responsibility of returning the items to their country of origin.
