Mexico records dozens of journalist murders since Sheinbaum took office

Since Governor Claudia Sheinbaum began her term in late October 2024, Mexico has compiled a tally of journalists killed in the country. The list released by local media includes sixteen names from October 2024 through July 2026, covering victims in Michoacán, Colima, Nuevo León, the State of Mexico, Tabasco, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Puebla, Sonora, Durango, Veracruz and other states.

Reporters Without Borders reported that nine journalists were assassinated in 2025, making Mexico the second‑most dangerous country for reporters after Gaza. In 2026, two further killings were recorded: Carlos Castro was shot dead on 8 January in Poza Rica, Veracruz, and Roxana Guzmán, a Veracruz‑based digital‑news founder, was abducted on 2 June, with her body discovered on 3 July. UNESCO’s observatory notes that 2022 remains the deadliest year in recent history with 19 journalist murders.

The ongoing violence underscores continued threats to press freedom across multiple Mexican states.
