Somos México and PAZ register as new national parties in Mexico

The Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) approved the national registration of two new political parties, Somos México and PAZ, on 1 July 2024. Both parties have begun establishing state‑level structures, with Somos México launching operations in Veracruz and Querétaro, and both seeking state accreditation in Guanajuato and Tamaulipas to receive public financing.

Public funding was reallocated to the newcomers, granting each roughly 2.26 million pesos for ordinary activities for the remainder of 2024, financed by reductions to the budgets of existing parties. The parties are also preparing for the 2027 general elections, emphasizing youth participation, internal primaries, and a “citizen council” model.

Legal challenges have arisen over Somos México’s name, colors and emblem, but the party reports that all prior impugnations were dismissed and its registration remains firm. The parties are now required to complete accreditation procedures in each state to be eligible for further funding and to field candidates in upcoming municipal and local elections.
