Tlaxcala 2027 race: new parties outpace PAN membership

Overview

June polls in Tlaxcala showed a large share of voters undecided—23–26% across three surveys—exceeding both PRI and PAN, underscoring persistent distrust in opposition proposals. Local deputy Miriam Martínez Sánchez announced on 17 June her intention to run for governor and seek an opposition alliance, while the PAN has yet to formalise a coalition. On 30 June the INE granted national registration to Somos México and PAZ, allowing them to receive offices, resources and public financing. PT commissioner Arcenio Ortega Lozano warned authorities to sanction any premature campaign activity. The INE confirmed the parties’ registration on 1 July, and they began building state-level structures, launching operations in Veracruz, Querétaro and other states. Legal challenges to Somos México’s name, colors and emblem were dismissed. Membership data released on 25 June confirmed PAZ (336,155 affiliates) and Somos México (294,094) had surpassed the PAN’s 277,665 members; each will receive roughly 3.1 million pesos in state subsidies for 2026. PAZ secured state accreditation in Tamaulipas on 9 July, reporting about 7,500 members and preparing to field candidates for municipal, local and federal seats in the 2027 elections. On 7 August, the Instituto Electoral de Tamaulipas (IETAM) approved PAZ’s accreditation to run independently in the 2027 local elections. PAZ intends to contest all 43 mayoralties, 22 local districts, and eight federal seats without an electoral alliance. Representative David Valenzuela Barrios stated the party is not a “satellite of the national 4T project” and will focus on security and prosperity. IETAM noted that the inclusion of PAZ and Somos México will require a redistribution of existing public financing without increasing the total budget. In response to the shifting landscape, the PAN in Tamaulipas has begun a leadership transition. Gloria Garza Jiménez has been elected President, with César Augusto Verástegui Ostos serving as General Secretary.
