Mexico hits record tourism with 67.7 million international travelers

Mexico has reached historic tourism milestones between January and August 2026. President Claudia Sheinbaum and Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora reported that 67.7 million international travelers visited the country, a 6.3% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This influx resulted in an economic impact of 24,152 million dollars, representing a 0.9% growth.

Key segments driving this growth include cruise tourism, which saw 8.2 million visitors (up 13.5%) and generated 716 million dollars. Additionally, the Tren Maya has transported over 65,000 foreign passengers. While international arrivals are up, data from INEGI indicates a mixed profile: international tourists staying at least one night decreased by 0.5%, while day-trippers (excursionists) increased by 3%.

Looking ahead, the government projects significant activity for the Day of the Dead celebrations, estimating the arrival of 1.69 million tourists. Major destinations for this season include Mexico City, Michoacán, Oaxaca, and Yucatán.

On a broader scale, the World Economic Forum noted that while global tourism arrivals reached 1.5 billion in 2025, the socio-economic impact has seen a decline, and price competitiveness has weakened in many regions.
