Global tourism industry trends
Overview
Tourism sectors in Spain and Mexico have reported significant activity throughout 2026. In Spain, August saw hotel overnight stays rise by 1.4% to over 48.7 million, with Madrid experiencing a record summer driven by a 28.1% surge in visitors from the United States.
In Mexico, international arrivals reached 67.69 million between January and August, a 6.3% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This growth resulted in an economic impact of 24.152 billion dollars, a 0.9% increase over the previous year. Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora noted that these figures reflect levels “not seen in over 20 years.” Key drivers included cruise tourism, which saw 8.2 million passengers (a 13.5% increase), and the Tren Maya, which transported 65,037 foreign passengers, up 1.6% from the previous year. Additionally, the average expenditure per air traveler rose by 15.2% to $1,270.
New data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) shows that in August, Mexico saw a 1.3% increase in total international travelers, reaching 7,985,700 visitors. While total arrivals grew, non-border tourists decreased by 6.6%, with declines in both air and land travel. In contrast, border tourists increased by 5.4% to 2,040,402. Total foreign visitor spending rose 7% annually to $2.409 billion, with spending by international tourists with overnight stays growing 8.1% to $2.160 billion. The United States remains the primary source of non-border tourism, accounting for 67.1% of arrivals.
