UN Highlights Global Refugee Situation on World Refugee Day

On June 20, the United Nations marked World Refugee Day, prompting a series of reports and statements across several countries. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) cited Mexico as a major destination, noting more than 70,500 asylum applications in the past year and a cumulative total of over 600,000 requests since 2019, with the majority coming from Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti and Honduras. The agency also warned that internal violence displaced at least 28,000 people within Mexico in 2024.

In Spain, the Comisión Española de Ayuda al Refugiado (CEAR) reported a 13.7 % drop in asylum applications and an 11 % acceptance rate, placing the country among the lowest in Europe. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) disclosed that the number of countries forcing journalists into exile doubled from 19 in 2021 to 40 in 2025, with 1,468 journalists from more than 60 nations receiving assistance, including 677 from Afghanistan.

Guinea announced it hosts 3,023 refugees and 3,053 asylum seekers, primarily from neighboring sub‑regional states, and affirmed its role as a safe haven. In Chad, a conference in Abéché emphasized the protection benefits of refugee inclusion in education, health, and employment. Regional organisations such as the Murcia‑based PAREM highlighted the need to accelerate regularisation for around 170 refugees. Government statements from Turkey and Venezuela stressed the humanitarian urgency of forced displacement, citing Gaza and broader global crises. These coordinated efforts underscore the ongoing challenges of protection, integration, and the demand for international solidarity.
