Mexico: Remittance decline impacts rural commerce
A decline in remittances is impacting rural commerce and social stability in Mexico, particularly in the state of Yucatán. Miguel Ángel Martínez Contreras, president of Poder Migrante Mexicano, A. C., reports that local families have less purchasing power, which has led to the decline of small village shops that previously offered credit.
As a result, pawn shops are seeing increased activity in the region. Experts warn that this economic shift could eventually lead to increased social tension and violence, such as robberies and kidnappings, as residents exhaust their assets. Additionally, small-scale farmers and merchants face significant challenges, including regulatory hurdles and difficulty competing with supermarket prices, leading to economic depression among rural producers.
