Mexico migration and remittance trends
Overview
Mexico is experiencing a transformation in its migratory landscape, evolving into a complex migratory hub. While the diaspora remains massive, with approximately 40 million people of Mexican origin living abroad, the nature of migration is shifting from circular movement to permanent settlement by entire families due to stricter border controls.
Economically, the nation has become heavily reliant on remittances. After a 4.6 percent decline in 2025, which ended an eleven-year growth streak, inflows have rebounded. By mid-2026, remittances showed six consecutive months of year-on-year growth. In July 2026, monthly inflows reached $5.571 billion, marking the second-highest monthly total for the year and a 3.0 percent annual increase according to Banco de México (Banxico).
Despite these high nominal totals, the real purchasing power of these funds is under pressure. A 6.6 percent appreciation of the exchange rate and a 3.1 percent annual inflation rate have caused the real monthly income per family to decrease. Data from INEGI indicates that the average monthly remittance of 7,438 pesos is insufficient to cover the urban food basket for a three-person household, which cost 7,637 pesos in July.
Parallel to the remittance rebound, Mexico is seeing a rise in private investment. Private equity investment reached $6.035 billion in the first half of 2026, a 12.3 percent increase over the 2025 total. Amexcap director Veronique Billia noted the country is in a “key moment” driven by nearshoring and U.S. supply chain integration. However, regional stability faces potential risks from proposed U.S. policy changes regarding deportation enforcement and outbound transfer taxes.
