Mexico remittances rise 3.7% in April to $4.98 bn
The Bank of Mexico reported that family remittances to Mexico grew 3.7% year‑on‑year in April 2026, reaching $4.978 billion. This marks a second consecutive month of growth and contributes to a record $19.676 billion received in the first four months of the year. While the total amount increased, the number of transactions fell 2.4% YoY to 12.4 million, the steepest decline in 16 years, and the average remittance rose to $403, up 4.9% from the same period in 2025.
BBVA Mexico forecasts a modest 2% annual rise in remittance flows for 2026, noting that most of the money comes from Mexican migrants in the United States. The bank cautioned that recent U.S. policy changes – an executive order tightening identification requirements for undocumented migrants – could affect future transfers. Bloomberg’s consensus had expected $5.17 billion for April, indicating the actual figure fell short of forecasts despite the positive growth rate.
Overall, remittances remain a crucial source of foreign‑exchange earnings and household income for millions of Mexican families, supporting spending on daily needs, health, and education.
