Mexico repatriates artifacts and contests U.S. auction of heritage pieces

Mexico is preparing the repatriation of three pre-Hispanic archaeological pieces recovered in New York, United States. The items, which include a 91-centimeter anthropomorphic clay warrior figure from the Ixtlán del Río style, a stone vessel from the Guerrero region, and an obsidian blade, were handed over to the Mexican Consulate in New York on July 15, 2026. The recovery was facilitated by investigations from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In a separate development, Mexico's Secretary of Culture, Claudia Curiel de Icaza, has demanded the removal of 31 additional archaeological pieces from an upcoming auction by the U.S.-based auction house Artemis Fine Arts. Specialists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) identified these items as Mexican cultural heritage. The Secretary stated that the commercialization of these goods violates the rights of communities to preserve their historical heritage.
