Mexico reports 46% drop in homicides under Sheinbaum's security strategy
President Claudia Sheinbaum and Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch presented a national report showing a 46% decline in intentional homicides between September 2024 and May 2026, the lowest level since 2015. The daily homicide average fell from 86.9 cases in 2024 to 47.3 in May 2026. The strategy also led to 56,134 arrests for serious crimes, the seizure of 419 tonnes of drugs and the dismantling of 2,407 clandestine laboratories.
Twenty‑eight of Mexico’s 32 states recorded homicide reductions, though eight states – including Guanajuato, Baja California and Sinaloa – still account for over half of the total cases. San Luis Potosí achieved the steepest decline, an 81% drop in the first five months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, topping the national pacification effort.
