Mexico reports 651 clandestine graves in 2025 amid data discrepancies
The Plataforma Ciudadana de Fosas has released its 2025 update, revealing significant discrepancies in the reporting of clandestine graves across Mexico. According to data compiled from state prosecutors, 651 clandestine graves were documented across 16 states. Sonora recorded the highest number with 204, followed by Chihuahua with 85, and Baja California Sur and Jalisco with 71 each.
In contrast, the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) reported only 32 graves across six states: Tamaulipas (15), Jalisco (6), Guerrero (5), Coahuila (3), Michoacán (2), and Hidalgo (1). Notably, the FGR did not report any graves in Sonora, Chihuahua, or Baja California Sur, despite findings by both state authorities and media outlets.
Journalistic monitoring identified 433 graves during the same period. The Plataforma Ciudadana de Fosas, a civil society effort coordinated by ARTICLE 19 Mexico and Central America, Data Cívica, and the Universidad Iberoamericana Human Rights Program, noted that these differences highlight the ongoing challenges in accessing complete, accessible, and comparable public information regarding the forensic and disappearance crisis in the country.
