Mexico reports fourth death from screw-worm parasite in 2026

Mexico has recorded its fourth death from the screw-worm parasite (gusano barrenador) in 2026. The most recent fatality occurred in the state of Veracruz during the week of August 16 to 22, according to the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (SINAVE).

Since the beginning of 2026, Mexico has confirmed 516 cases of the parasite, contributing to a total of 633 cases since 2025. Veracruz has emerged as the most affected state, accounting for 109 cases, which represents approximately 21% of the national total for this year. Other states reporting significant infection numbers include Chiapas, Puebla, Oaxaca, and Yucatán.

The disease is caused by the fly Cochliomyia hominivorax, which lays eggs in open wounds of humans or animals. Once hatched, the larvae feed on living tissue, causing severe destruction of flesh. Health authorities recommend disinfecting and monitoring any lesions to prevent infection.
