Measles outbreak in Xalapa hospital reports 16 cases and two deaths
A measles outbreak has been identified at the Centro Estatal de Cancerología (CECan) in Xalapa, Veracruz. As of September 15, 2026, the Mexican Ministry of Health has confirmed 16 cases and two deaths.
The confirmed cases include 12 healthcare workers, three patients, and one relative of a patient. One fatality was a 10-year-old girl undergoing treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. A second death involving a 22-year-old patient is currently awaiting a clinical ruling expected on September 17.
In response, the Dirección General de Epidemiología and the Centro Nacional para la Salud de la Infancia y la Adolescencia (CENSIA) have deployed a specialized brigade to Xalapa. The team is tasked with investigating the outbreak, supervising containment measures, and reinforcing vaccination and prevention efforts to interrupt transmission chains.
Authorities have called on the population of Xalapa to ensure vaccination schedules are up to date, particularly for children and individuals with medical conditions that increase complication risks. Veracruz currently holds an inventory of over 260,000 measles vaccine doses.
