Mexico reports high seismic activity including 4.0 magnitude quake in Guerrero

Mexico has experienced significant seismic activity, including a 4.0 magnitude earthquake in Guerrero on Friday, August 7, 2026. The tremor's epicenter was located 36 kilometers west of Tecpan de Galeana at a depth of 13 kilometers. Local and state Civil Protection authorities reported no injuries or material damage, though preventive inspections were activated.

This activity follows a highly active month in July 2026, during which the National Seismological Service (SSN) recorded 3,585 tremors across the country. The largest event of July was a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on July 17, centered off the coast of Chiapas near the Guatemala border. That major event triggered 1,292 aftershocks by the end of the month, with the largest aftershock reaching a magnitude of 6.5.

Seismic activity in regions like Guerrero is driven by the subduction process between the Cocos and North American tectonic plates, a zone responsible for approximately 25% of Mexico's total seismicity.
