Mexico reports historic 2.2% decline in soda consumption

Mexico has recorded a historic 2.2% decrease in soda consumption between January and May 2026, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). Health Secretary David Kershenobich announced the decline during a press conference at the National Palace, noting that this represents the first time a downward trend in sugary beverage consumption has been observed in the country.

The decline coincides with the implementation of comprehensive public health measures, including the removal of sweets and junk food from public elementary schools. To date, the health ministry reports having visited 83,713 schools, achieving 97.3% coverage in the primary sector, and reviewing the health of approximately 10.9 million students.

In addition to dietary changes, health authorities reported a 7.1% reduction in tobacco consumption during the same period. Ongoing efforts to sustain these trends include reinforced front-of-package warning labels and the promotion of sustainable healthy eating guides.
