Mexico reports influenza surge in Yucatán and screwworm deaths
Mexico is facing dual health challenges involving influenza and the spread of the screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax).
In the Yucatán Peninsula, influenza cases have shown a significant concentration. Between September 13 and 19, the states of Yucatán and Quintana Roo accounted for 51.6% of the 62 new cases reported nationwide. Yucatán alone reported 27 cases, representing approximately 43.5% of all new national diagnoses during that period.
Simultaneously, the country is dealing with outbreaks of myiasis caused by the screwworm fly. The Ministry of Health (SSA) reported one death in Veracruz during the week of September 19–25, bringing the total number of deaths from this infestation to five in Mexico since March 2026.
New human cases of screwworm infestation were confirmed in 11 states during week 37. Puebla currently has the highest concentration with three new cases, followed by Yucatán, Chiapas, Durango, and San Luis Potosí with one case each. Other states reporting single new cases include Mexico City, Colima, Hidalgo, Estado de México, Quintana Roo, and Tlaxcala.
