Mexico reports progress in national housing and Infonavit credit programs

The Mexican government has reported significant progress in its national housing strategy. According to Edna Vega, head of the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu), 667,000 homes have been contracted over the last two years, and more than 4.5 million Infonavit credits have been restructured to improve conditions for families.

The government aims to reach a total investment of 1 trillion pesos in housing, covering land acquisition, construction, and related services. Currently, 766 projects or plots are committed, with an accumulated investment of 75.9 billion pesos. These activities represent approximately 1.2 percent of the national GDP and serve as a major employment driver, generating an estimated four jobs for every home contracted or under construction.

Additionally, the 'Vivienda para el Bienestar' program has benefited 321,210 families, with a goal of reaching 400,000. For workers using Infonavit credits to purchase used homes, specific requirements must be met, including a minimum remaining useful life of 30 years, access to potable water, drainage, electricity, and proper access conditions. Applicants are advised to check their prequalification through 'Mi Cuenta Infonavit' to establish a budget before searching for properties.
