Mexico national housing and credit programs
Overview
The Mexican government is implementing broad housing and credit restructuring initiatives to support workers and families.
Through FOVISSSTE, the government has addressed problematic housing credits for 326,000 beneficiaries using debt forgiveness, liquidations, and financial support. ISSSTE Director General Martí Batres Guadarrama noted that an initial diagnosis found 400,000 of 800,000 active credits faced administrative issues or unpayable balances. As part of a social justice program, some debt cancellations reached up to 1.2 million pesos. FOVISSSTE also intends to resume direct housing construction, aiming to build 200,000 residential properties.
Parallel efforts involve Infonavit and the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu). Reports indicate that 4.5 million Infonavit credits have been restructured and 667,000 homes have been contracted over the last two years. The national housing strategy seeks a total investment of 1 trillion pesos. Additionally, the ‘Vivienda para el Bienestar’ program has benefited 321,210 families, with a target of 400,000.
