Mexico road infrastructure: SICT implements MegaBachetón 2026 program
Mexico's Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) is conducting extensive road maintenance and repairs across the country. Through the 'MegaBachetón 2026' program, the agency has addressed 74,701 kilometers of highways, deploying over 20,000 workers and nearly 6,000 units of specialized machinery. As of late September 2026, the program has repaired 56,906 potholes, covering approximately 182,099 square meters.
While these efforts aim to improve safety and functionality, various roadworks are causing localized disruptions. On the México-Toluca highway, asphalt resurfacing has led to lane reductions and significant traffic congestion, with works expected to continue through late October. In Veracruz, repairs to a storm drain on Simón Bolívar have caused closures and peak-hour delays.
Additionally, traffic fatalities have been reported on specific routes in Colima. Between January and September 2026, the Colima–Manzanillo and Tecomán–Cerro de Ortega highways recorded at least seven deaths each. Notable incidents include a multi-vehicle accident on the Colima–Manzanillo highway and a single accident on the Tecomán–Cerro de Ortega route that resulted in four fatalities.
