Traffic accidents and infrastructure updates in Mexico

Overview

Recent reports indicate an escalation in the severity of vehicular accidents and infrastructure-related disruptions across Mexico. In Colima, data from January to September 2026 reveals at least 14 fatalities on the Colima–Manzanillo and Tecomán–Cerro de Ortega highways, with one single accident claiming four lives.

High-impact collisions continue to be reported. On the Puebla-Orizaba highway, a vehicle was crushed between two trailers, leaving one person in critical condition. In Coahuila, a truck driver suffered burns to 90 percent of his body after his vehicle overturned and caught fire on the Monterrey-Saltillo highway. On the Cancún-Mérida highway, a fatal accident occurred at kilometer 160 when a Suzuki Ertiga lost control following a tire burst. The vehicle veered into vegetation, ejecting two passengers and trapping an elderly man, who required hydraulic equipment for rescue. The incident resulted in one woman’s death and injuries to six others.

Infrastructure-related disruptions and maintenance efforts are also evolving. The Mexico–Toluca highway has faced congestion due to asphalt resurfacing by the Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes (SICT). To address road conditions, the SICT’s ‘MegaBachetón 2026’ program has expanded significantly. As of late September, the program has utilized over 20,000 workers and 6,000 units of machinery to repair 56,906 potholes, covering approximately 182,099 square meters across 74,000 kilometers of the federal highway network.

Additionally, the National Bank of Public Works and Services (Banobras) is proposing a ‘single window’ system to accelerate development. This mechanism aims to reduce bureaucratic delays by establishing a 90-day deadline for project and permit approvals to provide greater certainty for investors.
