Mexico retirement system: Retirees return to work due to low pensions

In Mexico, the social security system is primarily composed of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) and the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE). Data from Consar indicates a significant number of retirees are returning to the workforce due to insufficient pension amounts. Specifically, over 555,000 retirees from both IMSS and ISSSTE have registered new contributions to Afore accounts after receiving their pension resolutions.

For those already receiving an IMSS pension under the 1973 Law, increases can be achieved through family assignments rather than additional contributions. These assignments provide percentage increases based on dependents: 15% for a spouse or concubine, 10% for children under 16, or 10% for children up to 25 who are students. Additionally, 10% may be granted for each parent who is economically dependent on the retiree.
