Overview

Retirees in Mexico are facing significant financial challenges related to the national pension system. In late August, members of the Alianza Nacional de Jubilados initiated a nationwide citizen consultation to protest pension cuts following reforms to Article 127 of the Constitution. Organizers, including workers from state entities such as CFE and Pemex, argued that these legislative changes retroactively impacted acquired rights and salary perceptions.

By mid-September, data indicated that the insufficiency of pension amounts has led to a trend of retirees returning to the workforce. Specifically, over 555,000 retirees from the IMSS and ISSSTE systems have registered new contributions to Afore accounts after receiving their pension resolutions.
