Mexico GDP grows 1.4% in Q2 2026 amid USMCA trade negotiations

Mexico's economy demonstrated significant momentum in the second quarter of 2026, recording a GDP growth of 1.4%. According to OECD data, this performance placed Mexico second in terms of quarterly growth among G20 economies, trailing only India, which grew by 1.8%. This represents a recovery from a 0.3% contraction in the first quarter of the year.

In response to trade pressures from the United States, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a strategic plan to increase imports from the U.S. to reduce the bilateral trade deficit. This diplomatic maneuver aims to mitigate potential tariffs from the Trump administration on Mexican steel, aluminum, and vehicles. As part of the USMCA review process, Mexico is also working to strengthen North American supply chains by curbing imports from non-free-trade partners, such as China, where tariffs of up to 50% have already been implemented on various goods.

While economic indicators show growth, Fitch Ratings noted that persistent uncertainty regarding the USMCA and internal reforms could pose risks to future investment. Additionally, the Mexican government is exploring ways to balance trade through increased domestic production and strategic purchasing to satisfy Washington's demands for a reduced trade deficit.
