Mexico seeks to reduce U.S. tariffs on steel and automobiles

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has reported progress in trade negotiations with the United States. The Mexican government is pursuing two primary objectives: reducing existing tariffs on steel and automobiles and preventing the imposition of new tariffs.

To address concerns regarding the U.S. trade deficit, Mexico is proposing to increase its imports of American products. Sheinbaum noted that Mexico is currently the largest global purchaser of U.S. goods. She also highlighted that despite recent tariff changes under the Trump administration, Mexican exports have grown, particularly in the electronics sector, as Mexico becomes a production hub for value-added electronic goods.

Economic Secretary Marcelo Ebrard confirmed that bilateral discussions within the USMCA review include steel, aluminum, and automotive sectors, as well as rules of origin and supply chain management. The goal is to maintain Mexico's competitive position against other exporters to the U.S. market.
