Mexico seeks U.S. tariff exemptions for steel and autos

Mexico is pursuing trade exemptions for automobile and steel exports to the United States to maintain the stability of existing supply chains. Mexican officials have signaled that tariffs should be viewed as a negotiating lever rather than a permanent barrier, drawing parallels to the exemptions currently being reviewed by the U.S. for Canada.

Simultaneously, the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum is considering stricter trade restrictions and higher import tariffs on certain Chinese goods, including steel and vehicles. This move is intended to align Mexican commercial policy with Washington and address U.S. demands for stronger enforcement against Chinese manufacturers using Mexico as a transshipment point to enter North America.

While these measures aim to protect the USMCA framework and local manufacturing, they present a significant economic challenge. Analysts warn that aggressive tariffs on Chinese industrial components could increase domestic production costs and impact Mexico’s nearshoring ecosystem. Additionally, China has cautioned Mexico against using trade policy as a political bargaining chip.
