Mexico seeks U.S. tariff reductions on steel, aluminum, and autos

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the federal government is engaged in intense negotiations with the United States to improve trade conditions under the USMCA framework. Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard has made multiple trips to Washington to lead discussions aimed at reducing tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automotive exports.

Sheinbaum noted that while many Mexican exports currently enter the U.S. without tariffs, the government seeks a more favorable agreement to address unilateral decisions made by the United States. The negotiations also involve discussions regarding production capacity and Section 301 measures.

Beyond trade, the Mexican administration is seeking reciprocity on migration and security issues. Sheinbaum emphasized that cooperation is necessary for regional development to address migration and requested that the U.S. take action to prevent the flow of weapons into Mexico and address domestic drug consumption.
