Mexico seeks U.S. trade agreement to reduce steel and vehicle tariffs
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed optimism regarding a potential trade agreement with the United States aimed at reducing existing tariffs. Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard is currently in Washington to lead these negotiations.
Mexico is seeking to lower significant tariffs, including 50 percent on steel, aluminum, and their derivatives, and 25 percent on vehicles. Additionally, a 10 percent tariff applies to Mexican goods exported outside the USMCA framework. The administration is also working to address U.S. concerns regarding the triangulation of products through Mexico to avoid value-added requirements.
These discussions are taking place amidst heightened trade tensions between the United States and Canada. Despite the commercial dispute between Washington and Ottawa, Sheinbaum has stated that she does not expect the situation to negatively impact the Mexican economy.
