Mexico sees progress in T-MEC negotiations
President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the second round of T-MEC (USMCA) talks in Washington concluded positively, with Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard reporting constructive discussions on rules of origin, economic security, agriculture and automotive issues.
Ebrard confirmed that a virtual meeting of the three parties – Mexico, the United States and Canada – is scheduled for 1 July to decide whether the pact will be automatically extended for 16 years or continue on a 10‑year cycle with periodic reviews. Both Mexican officials and industry leader Carlos Noé Hernández of Canacintra expressed optimism that the agreement will be preserved despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism.
The negotiations are part of the ongoing review process established when the T‑MEC replaced NAFTA in 2020, and the next bilateral round is planned for 20 July in Mexico City.
