Mexico's Ciudad Juárez homicide spike contrasts with Argentina's Santa Fe drop
In Mexico, residential robberies in Cuautitlán Izcalli fell 34% during the first five months of 2026, while homicide activity showed divergent trends. The municipality of Tecámac recorded 22 intentional homicides in the first half of the year – roughly one killing every eight days – and Ciudad Juárez saw its June total rise to 51 murders, up from 39 in May. A national tally for June 30 listed 39 homicides, with Sinaloa and Michoacán reporting the highest daily counts (five each) and Baja California and Sonora four each.
In the state of Morelos, four municipalities – Emiliano Zapata, Temixco, Yautepec and Cuautla – ranked among the nation’s most violent, each exceeding 27 homicides per 100,000 residents.
Across the Río de la Plata, Argentina’s city of Mar del Plata experienced a 35% increase in overall crime and recorded 23 homicides in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, the province of Santa Fe announced a historic low of 73 homicides in the same period, a 67% reduction from 2023, with the biggest declines in the Rosario (down 70%) and La Capital (down 57%) departments.
These contrasting developments illustrate varied crime dynamics within Mexico and Argentina during 2026.
