Mexico seizes 24,400 L of liquid methamphetamine in record bust

Mexican authorities confiscated 24,400 litres of liquid methamphetamine in Los Mochis, Sinaloa – the second‑largest quantity ever recorded in the country. The operation also yielded 2.1 tonnes of cocaine seized in two additional states and resulted in the arrest of one suspect.

The seizure is part of an intensified crackdown on drug trafficking following the return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency, with U.S. officials pressing Mexico to curtail the flow of narcotics across the border. The methamphetamine was found in an area controlled by the Sinaloa cartel, founded by Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who is currently serving a life sentence in the United States.

Officials highlighted ongoing violent clashes between rival factions of the Sinaloa cartel in the state, which have caused hundreds of deaths and disappearances since 2024. Washington has accused the cartel of smuggling fentanyl into the United States, fueling thousands of overdose deaths annually.
