Mexico seizes clandestine refinery near National Guard base in Reynosa

Mexico's Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) seized a clandestine oil refinery in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, located about 1.5 km from a National Guard base and visible from the nearby Libramiento Sur Dos and Brecha El Becerro routes. The facility, allegedly run by organized‑crime groups, held at least seven vertical storage tanks and eleven mobile tanks. Authorities confiscated roughly 3.7 million litres of fuel along with vehicles, trucks, pipas, generators and other equipment. The site was placed under custody of the Army and National Guard after the operation, which also involved the Ministry of Defense and Pemex security personnel. Deputy Federico Döring of the PAN publicly questioned how such a large installation could operate undetected for months.

The seizure highlights ongoing challenges with illicit fuel production (huachicol) in northern Mexico and prompted criticism of local security oversight.
