Mexico Sends Firefighters to Canada to Aid Wildfire Fight

Mexico has deployed additional forest‑fire combatants to Canada under a bilateral agreement to help control the country's massive wildfire season. The first Mexican contingent, including 19 specialists from Mexico City’s DGCORENADR, arrived in Thunder Bay, Ontario on 28 July. A second group was sent to British Columbia on 3 August, and a third contingent of 100 combatants and two technicians, nine of them women, has now been dispatched to assist in British Columbia.

The missions are coordinated through the Memorandum of Understanding between Canada and Mexico and are part of Conafor’s effort to bolster international fire‑management resources. Canada currently faces about 670 active wildfires and has declared a national preparedness level 5, prompting the request for foreign assistance. The Mexican teams bring expertise in fire suppression, safety, and emergency response, reinforcing technical cooperation between the two nations.
