Mexico sentences three men to 158 years for killing surfers

A Mexican court in Ensenada has sentenced three men to 158 years and nine months in prison each for the 2024 murders of two Australian surfers, Jake and Callum Robinson, and their American friend, Carter Rhoad. The defendants—identified as Jesús Gerardo (alias ‘El Kekas’), Irineo Francisco, and Ángel Jesús—were found guilty of aggravated homicide, aggravated robbery, and violent vehicle theft.

The victims were attacked on April 27, 2024, while camping at a remote beach in Baja California. The assailants reportedly attempted to steal the victims' belongings and their Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck. The bodies were later discovered in a cliff-top well more than 15 meters deep, with gunshot wounds to the head.

Judge Raul Hernandez ruled that the killings were premeditated. While prosecutors had requested sentences of 210 years, the final ruling adhered to regional legal frameworks. The case has drawn international attention and caused concern within the local tourism and surfing communities regarding safety in the region.
