Three men sentenced for 2024 triple homicide of surfers
Overview
A Mexican judge in Ensenada, Baja California, has sentenced three men to 158 years and nine months in prison each for the 2024 murders of Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend, Jack Carter Rhoad.
Following a trial that included a reconstruction of the events, Jesús Gerardo García (known as ‘El Kekas’), Irineo Francisco García Montaño, and Ángel Jesús León Aguilera were convicted of aggravated homicide, aggravated robbery, violent robbery, and violent vehicle theft. The victims disappeared in late April 2024 while camping near Punta San José; their bodies were discovered on May 3, 2024, at the bottom of a clifftop shaft with gunshot wounds to the head. Prosecutors argued the killings were premeditated during an attempt to steal the group’s pickup truck and vehicle tires.
Testimony revealed the crime was instigated by García’s former partner, Ary Gisell Silva Raya, who met the victims and encouraged the robbery. In a separate proceeding, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison. While prosecutors had sought sentences of up to 210 years and damages exceeding $100,000, the judge ruled that compensation for the families must be pursued through separate civil proceedings. The case, which involved assistance from the FBI, drew international attention due to the nature of the killings and its impact on regional tourism, with officials noting a decline in visitors to the area following the incident.
