President Claudia Sheinbaum has submitted a constitutional reform initiative to the Congress of the Union aimed at prohibiting dual nationality for candidates seeking the Presidency, governorships, or the Head of Government of Mexico City. The proposal seeks to amend Articles 82, 116, and 122 of the Constitution to ensure that those holding the nation's highest executive offices maintain exclusive loyalty to Mexico.

Under the proposed changes, candidates would be required to formally renounce any second nationality before registering for an election. Furthermore, once in office, officials would be prohibited from acquiring new nationalities, using foreign passports or identity documents, exercising political rights in another state, or seeking foreign diplomatic protection. The initiative also includes plans to reform the Law of Nationality to establish clear procedures for renouncing foreign citizenship.

Legal counsel for the Presidency, Luisa María Alcalde, noted that the reform aims to close interpretative gaps in Article 32, which currently lacks clarity regarding individuals who hold dual citizenship prior to seeking office. While some legislators, such as Ricardo Monreal, have called for a serious and careful analysis of the proposal's constitutional implications, the administration maintains the measure is essential to protect national sovereignty and prevent foreign interference.
