Mexico Supreme Court reviews Mahahual land use disputes

The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) in Mexico has taken up a legal case regarding land use changes in Mahahual, Quintana Roo. The court will analyze three resources filed by local residents against modifications to the Urban Development Program of Othón P. Blanco.

These modifications paved the way for the ‘Perfect Day’ megaproject by Royal Caribbean. While the project no longer holds environmental authorization, the legal dispute over territorial planning continues. The SCJN's review will determine how urban planning modifications can be challenged and the legal timelines for doing so. The case is considered significant for Quintana Roo as it addresses the limits of modifying urban plans in tourist communities and the potential long-term environmental and social consequences.
